Il roseto della principessa

Le rose hanno sempre avuto un fascino particolare su di me. Sarà che mi ricordano la nonna materna che faceva il profumo con i petali di rose e tanta pazienza: le coglieva in giardino, le sceglieva con cura, accarezzandole una ad una. Le portava in casa e staccava ogni petalo con una delicatezza che sembrava irreale. Prendeva i barattoli, quelli grandi delle conserve, e li riempiva di acqua e limone, immergeva i petali e li lasciava li. Dopo qualche giorno travasava il tutto, in gran segreto e diventava il profumo della buona notte, quello che se chiudo gli occhi ancora lo sento.

Roses always had a certain charm on me. It could be because they remind me of my grandma, my mum’s mother. She used to make perfume out of the petals, with great patience. She’d pick the best ones from the garden, caressing each and every one. She’d bring them into the house and remove the petals one by one, with unbelievable grace. Then she took glass jars full of water and lemon juice, put the petals in and leave them to flower. After a few days she’d pour the whole thing and it would become the perfume for good nights, the one I can still smell when I close my eyes.

Sarà che quando ho visto il roseto non ho potuto che desiderarlo come cornice di queste immagini, scattate poco prima di cena, in un weekend toscano che ricordo con affetto

It could be that when I saw these rose bushes I couldn’t desire anything else as a background for these imagese, taken a little before dinner, in a weekend in Tuscany I cherish dearly.
